Magnetic-driven vs Mechanically sealed version for centrifugal pumps
13/12/2016From PP+glass to E-TFE+carbon or FRP resin, ARGAL centrifugal pumps can be magnetically driven or mechanically sealed to ensure the maximum safety when pumping chemical agents (aggressive, corrosive, abrasive, viscous, charged with solids and impurities). But how do you choose the correct configuration?
It mainly depends on the properties and quantity of the liquid. If the liquid to pump is particularly dangerous, with risk of explosion, pollution, or environmental and civil damage - like hydrogen peroxide or acetyl nitrate – it is recommended to choose the magnetic-driven configuration to avoid any liquid leakage that could cause high risks of damages.
Why?
The magnetic driven system excludes any type of rotating seal. The sealing is made and guaranteed by an O-ring static gasket placed in the connection between the volute casing and the rear casing.
Where are mag-driven pumps necessary?
In fume abatement scrubbers where the most dangerous liquid can be handled. 4 of magnetic-driven ISO 2859 centrifugal pumps from FRONTIERA series were chosen to pump a detergent solution containing nitric acid. Check the application here.
In the mining industry, where explosive agents are constantly used, it is important to exclude any risk due to leakage and to ensure the maximum safety when transferring the liquids. ROUTE mag-driven pumps were installed on skids for the circulation of reagents (flocculants, coagulants, surfactants…) on the extraction process. Check the application here.
In the desalination processes, where corrosion is constantly present, in the liquids and in the atmospheres. Magnetic pumps can operate as unloading pumps in the HCl plant (Hydrochloric Acid) or as cleaning pumps in the electrolysis phase to remove the residues. Check the application here.
But if the liquid is not clean, laden with solids and impurities like wastewater or mineral slurry, it is preferred to install a mechanically sealed pump.
Why?
In the sealed version, the mechanical seal is mounted on the shaft, between the rear casing and the impeller, to prevent any liquid leakage on the motor. The seal material must be adapted according to the liquid pumped.
Where are mech-sealed pumps installed?
The seawater sector, including aquarium, thermal baths, luxury resorts with SPA and swimming pools, safari parks, aquaculture…, is very corrosive. The main liquid pump is seawater or freshwater with intake pumps from the source, filtration pumps to remove the solids contained in the liquid, circulation pumps to operate continuously and supply the pools. ROUTE, FRONTIERA and SATURNevo pumps with their mech-sealed configuration are the most required solutions. Check the application here.
In the electrochlorination process, mech-sealed pumps are needed to transfer seawater and a cleaning solution containing caustic soda, or sodium hypochlorite. Check the application here.
